Vaginal Discharge In Pregnancy

The vagina is a muscular, elastic tubular structure that connects the cervix to the outside of the body. So the vaginal connection to the outside of the body the vagina must have some lubricous to maintain moisturizing and for protective nature.

Discharge depends upon the age of women, sexual activity, and diet of women.


2. Normal Vaginal Discharge

Not all bacteria are bad some are good such as lactobacilli bacteria normally present in the vagina that maintain a healthy environment. If the ph of the vagina is disturbed then the bacteria decrease and yeasts or bad bacteria overgrow and that leads to infection.


3. During Pregnancy

Normal Vaginal discharge is clear, thin white, or cream-coloured and has a mild smell. During pregnancy, the consistency, thickness, frequency, and amount may vary. During pregnancy, the discharge said a lot about the pregnancy’s well-being.


4. Types of Discharge

  • Leukorrhea: A small amount of thin, white, colourless, no strong smell normally present during pregnancy. That’s because of hormonal changes that protect the vagina from infection.
  • Watery discharge: A large gush of clear, watery discharge from the vagina that’s abnormal it may b urine or may b an amniotic fluid.
  • Show: A sticky, jelly-like discharge from the vagina. It is also variable in texture and colour during pregnancy.

5. Changes During Pregnancy

In pregnancy, the risk of infection increases so in case of infection the vaginal discharge change. If it includes:

  • Greenish, yellow, brown, grey
  • Smelly (fishy odour)
  • Bloody
  • Thick in texture, white thin runny
  • Associated with itching or burning sensation
  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Vaginal discomfort

6. Causes of Increased Discharge

  • As the pregnancy grows, uterus size also increases putting pressure on the cervix, leading to increased vaginal discharge.

7. When to Contact a Doctor

  • Leaking or gushing fluid: If a sudden abrupt gush of fluid from the vagina especially with pains.
  • Other symptoms: fever, chills, and fatigue are added symptoms of vaginal disease.
